Uses of GPS Vehicle Tracking

There are many benefits to GPS vehicle tracking. Successful companies worldwide are currently using the technology. There are both pros as well as cons that have made implementation of GPS technology debatable. With two sides to the story, the goal of this brief article is to touch some on each side.

One of the most popular purposes of GPS technology is its use to track the location of vehicles that are owned by the company. If a vehicle goes off course, it will quickly be noted by the technology. Many employees were outraged when companies first began using the technology. Some felt that the use was a violation of constitutional rights. Others felt that the company using the technology doubted their honesty and loyalty.

As companies implemented the use of the technology, they found that productivity was increased, as was the utilization of work hours. Tracking has reduced the number of accidents that involve company vehicles. The reduction in accidents has saved companies thousands of dollars in repairs, lost time and insurance premiums.

The popularity of the technology has brought it to the criminal courtroom. One of the first times was in a murder trial. A consumer used GPS technology in order to track a spouse. As a result of finding her cheating, the wife and her Romeo were murdered by the husband. Romeo’s family filed suit in the civil courts against the GPS inventors and worldwide debate ensued concerning where lines should be drawn. The family eventually lost the lawsuit.

Today a vast majority of vehicle rental agencies use one form or another of vehicle tracking with GPS. Since implementing this technology, theft of rental vehicles has been virtually eliminated. In addition, the company may check for speeding vehicles or those that are driven out of the agreed upon areas, breaking the contractual agreements.

The technology is also used in delivery companies. Owners of the companies and their customers now can track the location of shipments at all times. Companies can verify that deliveries were made to the correct business or home. This is a win-win situation benefiting both the customer and the company.

GPS auto tracking is found beneficial in many circumstances. It is not likely to go away any time soon, so whether you find it good or bad, you will have to learn to live with it.
