Cheap Hard Drive Recovery Software Options
Choosing a cheap hard drive recovery software utility often means deciding between ones for making disk repairs or data recovery. In this article, we look at some of the freeware and commercial tools you can use in both scenarios.
General purpose HDD repair tools are relatively uncommon for fixing software related issues. Microsoft do provide their own disk checking application [Explorer/select partition/choose properties/tools tab] which can scan your hard drive for signs of bad sectors and attempt to do the repairs. If the HDD repairs cannot be completed then the application marks these additions as off-limits for saving any future data.
As regards commercial tools, HDD Regenerator is probably the most widely used for fixing sector issues, boot record problems, etc. It is also worth checking with your computer manufacturer’s website to see if they have any disk repair tools specifically for your brand of hard drive. This would probably make more sense as the manufacturers would already have these tools in place for their own staff.
When looking at cheap hard drive recovery options for simply retrieving your lost data, there is a much wider range of tools you can choose from. Many of the freeware tools work just as well as commercial options so you should consider at least in the free scan with products like Smart Recover or Undelete Plus. Commercial products (e.g. Restore My Files) are generally more able to find data that belongs to lost or formatted data since these products do not require the file allocation table in order to recompile clusters into recognizable documents.
Lastly, no matter which cheap hard drive recovery software you use, it should be noted that it is better advised to do data recovery first before attempting a HDD repair. The reason for this is that HDD repairs could actually reorganize clusters on the disk making data recovery less feasible.
